Will your Cheese move in 2008?

What’s your Cheese? Will your Cheese move in 2008? And when it does, will you move with your Cheese? Or, if it doesn’t, will you discard your Old Cheese and get a New Cheese? What’s with the cheese?

whomovedmycheesecover.jpgThe cheese is the metaphor for anything that you want in Dr. Spencer Johnson’s “Who Moved My Cheese?”. It’s a less-than-100-page paperback that outlines principles to “An A-mazing Way to Deal with Change In Your Work and In Your Life.”

It’s a refreshing look at how change can be dealt with–positively or negatively–illustrated by two mice Sniff and Scurry, and two Littlepeople Hem and Haw. The story shows how simplicity and being proactive can get you your new cheese; or how over-analyzing and slow to react can get you nowhere.

In the end, the story summarizes the principles in “The Handwriting on the Wall” which the four little characters should see in the walls of the Maze they went through:

  1. They Keep Moving The Cheese: CHANGE HAPPENS
  2. Get Ready for the Cheese to Move: ANTICIPATE CHANGE
  3. Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting Old: MONITOR CHANGE
  4. The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese, The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese: ADAPT TO CHANGE QUICKLY
  5. Move With the Cheese: CHANGE
  6. Savor The Adventure And Enjoy The Taste Of New Cheese!: ENJOY CHANGE!
  7. They Keep Moving The Cheese: BE READY TO CHANGE QUICKLY AND ENJOY IT AGAIN AND AGAIN

It is an interesting read, indeed. Never have I read something very simple yet very true–a fresh view of how to deal with change. Refreshing, indeed, since reading it made me wide-eyed I could almost see and taste my Cheese!

Change, this inevitable factor in life’s equation, a given, a constant, and what we do with the variables is all up to us.

It’s a new year and I have resolved to decide that whatever Cheese is for me, and whether they move my Cheese a thousand times, there’s always these seven principles I can go back to.

Glad to have my cheese moved, starting this first day of 2008! I will have my cheese moved and eat it too!

Happy New Year to all!
